English Premiership Football 2006-07 – Aston Villa 2:0 Newcastle

Report by Steven Cronin

Aston Villa’s renaissance under the advice of Martin O’Neill continued at Villa Park as the property crew place Newcastle to the sword.

New operator Randy Lerner produced his very first look in the directors’ box sat up coming to outgoing chairman Doug Ellis.

And it was smiles all round as Villa sustained their remarkable start off to the time versus Glen Roeder’s Toon.

With significant transfer exercise not anticipated till the January transfer window, O’Neill’s first assault on the Premiership will be undertaken with much the identical squad David O’Leary failed so miserably with.

The match started in explosive fashion, Luke Moore firing a lower shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty place.

The young Villa striker exhibits wonderful promise and is starting up to endear himself to the Villa Park faithful.

Newcastle fought back and appreciated spells of possession, although it was Villa who doubled their lead on the 50 percent hour when Juan Pablo Angel danced his way previous Shay Provided and stroked the ball into an empty net.

The Columbian took his objective effectively and is relishing his option as major striker in the absence of Czech hit guy Milan Baros.

Newcastle started off brightly right after the break, but issues took a turn for the worse when front man star signing Martins went down clutching his knee.

Having utilized his 3 substitutes the unfortunate Roeder could only sit and watch as United played the remainder of the match with only 10 males.

The further man made life simpler for Villa and Moore practically took benefit in the ultimate minutes with a vicious strike that cannoned off the crossbar.

A happy Martin O’Neill stated right after the match “I’ve completed totally absolutely nothing at all.

“These gamers have performed it on their own and, in actuality, they preserve me heading to be perfectly honest.

“There is a excellent spirit inside of them and they want to play.”

Champions League Football – Does Aston Villa Have What It Takes?

Write-up by Peri Witny

I have been subsequent the Champion’s League very closely because it began in December currently being an ardent fan of football. A single factor I have derived from the efficiency of the various teams is that though Martin O’Neill’s team may possibly yet be far from reaching the title nevertheless it won’t arrive as a shock to me if they completed someplace in the best 4 this season.

I discover it challenging to disagree that Aston Villa is not as sturdy a football team as say that of Manchester United, Liverpool or the Arsenal and I won’t wager on them successful the trophy just yet. Even so, right after successful 5 league matches out of 6, obtaining the 4th area in the Premier League and currently being just one level quick of Chelsea exhibits that they are surely catching up with them.

To know that you are taking part in to lose must be very a challenging placement to discover oneself in but it is peculiar that Coach O’Neill and his group are just great with it specifically after possessing earned 21 points from 27 which reveals they are in best sort. It was ironic to witness Aston Villa present their gumption in a match in opposition to the Arsenal which ended in a draw. Villa has undoubtedly come far underneath the advice of O’Neill as was apparent from the 2nd fifty percent comeback they made thanks to two great targets by Gareth Barry and Zat Knight. This was a Boxing Day present for Aston as the draw assisted them in retaining their 3 points lead around Arsène Wenger’s side.

The character and dedication with which the Aston Villa gamers defended their group towards a reduction from Arsenal was a revelation for me and fans all more than. Previously on if they had been placed in a scenario wherever they were lagging behind a 1st course staff this kind of as Arsenal they would have provided up prolonged time ago but not this new group that Aston is building into. Their self-confidence remained unwavering in the deal with of adversity and they proved that they had been a courageous crew that took destiny in their very own fingers. It does not take prolonged for the consequence of football matches to turn all around and surprise all!

In addition to these newfound qualities of Aston Villa as a group, the unique characteristics possessed by football gamers Martin Laursen, Ashely Young, Steve Sidwell and James Milner are proving to be the driving force behind its’ new role as a strongly competitive aspect. I really don’t see them letting anybody take them lightly and dismiss them so easily.

The only issue that worries me at the minute is a player finding injured and not getting capable to play. John Carew is already lacking from the action so in this kind of a circumstance the coach will have to play either a single of these 2 players, Marlon Harewood or Nathan Delfouneso. I am not stating that these two players ought to be rejected outright as they have a whole lot of guarantee of turning into long run stars but it is experience and knowledge that is needed by Aston at this point. They have as well much at stake to depart anything to possibility. For that reason, it won’t be unwise to recommend that they should significantly consider hiring a new forward.

The ouster of Carew due to injury has in some techniques proved to be a blessing in disguise. O’Neill has experimented with setting up Barry, Sidwell and Petroy in the central midfield and has also deployed Milner and Youthful on the flanks. The end result has not been disappointing. It can make me wonder if the Norwegian striker will locate himself a place on the team when he is match adequate to return.

O’Neill would seem to settle quite a score by the Bulgarian Petrov. I also have started to accept him in the staff but it is a mystery to me why O’Neill would consider so hard to make sure Petrov got a area on the crew. No doubt he is exhibiting a whole lot of improvement this time but then let’s be fair. His passing is at finest cost-effective whereas what Aston needs is incisiveness. He lacks competitiveness and is not athletic enough as a midfielder need to be. It may possibly sound harsh to some but believe in me, soon after acquiring observed him for the past 2 and a fifty percent a long time I am not ready to realize what it is that makes O’Neill so keen on acquiring him on an otherwise splendid group.

One weakness that I have observed is the weak total-back positions. Reo-Coker offered Arsenal with their 1st objective of the match but that could be just a one time error that everyone could fall prey to. Luke Youthful is also enjoying effectively out of his acquainted function although he could do much better back wherever he belonged.

All explained Aston Villa seems to be a excellent contender for a location amongst the top rated 4. It is phenomenal that from getting the group that always identified by itself proper at the bottom of the ranks should abruptly be competing for the top rated slots. I couldn’t doubt manager O’Neill’s claim that it ought come as no surprise if his aspect finishes in the leading four.

Although you will not find them at Villa park for every home game, clutching a pie and a programme. they all have stated publicly that they are Villa fans, so we will just have to take their word for it.

But did Aston Villa have another even more famous fan. the very first fictional detective character. No not Hercule Poiret, or Tin Tin, but Sherlock Holmes. His creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a fascinating man, who lived a long and eventful life. One of ten children born into poverty, and with an alcoholic father. he did not have the best of starts in life. He trained to be a doctor, was a novelist and lifelong traveller, all round sportsman, popularising ski-ing in Switzerland. And once bowling out W.G. Grace at cricket. he stood for Parliament twice, made a fortune and squandered most of it promoting spiritualism.

So how might he have been a Villa supporter. Here is the evidence. In 1879 Arthur Conan Doyle was a poor medical student. And as part of his training he moved to Aston in Birmingham working as an assistant to Dr Reginald Ratcliffe Hoare at Clifton House on the Aston road in Birmingham. He was paid a salary of two pounds a month, and was responsible for making house calls and dispensing medicines. In fact he and Dr Hoare, got on so well he returned to help out in the surgery many times, after finishing his training. And no doubt supporting his beloved Aston villa at the weekends. (Incidentally Villa first entered the F.A. cup in the 1879/80 season)

In 1879 Aston Villa were still an amateur side, playing at the Wellington road ground in Perry Barr. Birmingham. It is possible that Conan Doyle, a keen sportsman, could have known Villa`s early founder members and fellow scotsmen, such as William McGregor, Archie Hunter; and George Ramsay.and perhaps agreed to watch a game, or even play for Villa.

Some of my critics might suggest that it was Conan Doyle who lived in Aston not Sherlock Holmes But Conan Doyle received many letters from members of the public asking him to solve criminal cases. Some addressed to him, but many simply addressed to Sherlock Holmes at his Baker street address. And as most fiction writers base their characters on aspects of their own personality. I think it is highly probable that Sherlock Holmes was Aston Villas first celebrity football fan.

Below is the evidence you can make your own judgement.

1 Lived within a hansom cab ride from Villa`s ground at the time.

2 He was a keen sportsman excelling at football, rugby and cricket at school.

3 Aston Villa at that time had a strong Scottish contingent.

4 Sherlock holmes was a Villa fan would make a great chant, ringing around Villa Park.

5.And finally, I am sure at the final game of the season. I am certain I saw a man in a deerstalker hat. sitting in the seat in front of me, puffing away contentedly on his meerschaum pipe, engrossed in the game. Was he or wasn`t he, I had to find out, so I tapped him on the shoulder, and nervously blurted out “are you Sherlock Holmes and are you a Villa fan.” But just then the final whistle blew, he jumped up and disappeared into the departing crowd. So I will never know. But I am one hundred percent convinced that Sherlock Holmes was indeed Aston Villas first celebrity football fan.
